Worked example: room square footage with a waste buffer
The default example is a 12 ft by 10 ft rectangle. Base area is 12 x 10 = 120 sq ft.
With a 10% waste buffer, order area is 120 x 1.10 = 132 sq ft.
At $4.50 per sq ft, the planning material estimate is 132 x $4.50 = $594 before taxes, delivery, prep, trim, underlayment, labor, and project minimums.
How we calculate square footage
For a rectangle, base area is length x width x quantity. For four walls, base wall area is 2 x (room length + room width) x wall height, minus standard door and window opening allowances, then multiplied by quantity. For a circle, base area is pi x (diameter / 2)^2 x quantity.
Total planning area is the greater of the minimum order and base area x (1 + waste buffer / 100). Estimated material cost is total planning area x optional unit cost.

How much waste buffer should I use?

Contractors may price by square foot, but the final quote can also include minimum charges, access, prep, removal, disposal, setup time, cut complexity, stairs, pattern matching, and project risk.
