The default room is 12 ft by 10 ft with 8 ft walls, 1 door, 2 windows, and the ceiling included. Wall area is 2 x (12 + 10) x 8 x 1 = 352 sq ft. Ceiling area is 12 x 10 x 1 = 120 sq ft.

Openings are 1 x 21 + 2 x 15 = 51 sq ft. Base area is 352 + 120 - 51 = 421 sq ft.

With a 12% waste buffer, order area is 421 x 1.12 = 471.52 sq ft. Each 8 ft x 4 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, so sheets are ceil(471.52 / 32) = 15.

Screws are ceil(15 x 32) = 480, or ceil(480 / 200) = 3 screw boxes. Tape rolls are ceil(471.52 / 250) = 2 and compound buckets are ceil(471.52 / 450) = 2.

Material total is 15 x $15 + 3 x $10 + 2 x $6 + 2 x $18 + $45 = $348.

How this drywall calculator estimates wall area, ceiling area, and openings

Wall area is 2 x (room length + room width) x wall height x room count. Ceiling area is room length x room width x room count when the ceiling option is checked. Standard door and window opening allowances are subtracted before waste is added.

How drywall sheet quantity is rounded from room area and waste

Order area is base area x (1 + waste buffer / 100). Sheet count is rounded up from order area divided by sheet area, because drywall is bought as complete sheets.

How screws, tape rolls, and compound buckets are calculated

Screws are sheets x screws per sheet, rounded up. Screw boxes are rounded up from screws divided by screws per box. Tape rolls and compound buckets are rounded up from order area divided by their editable coverage assumptions.

How to read the drywall material total before shopping

The total includes sheets, screw boxes, tape rolls, compound buckets, and the delivery reserve. It does not include hanging labor, taping labor, sanding, texture, primer, paint, dust control, disposal, or code-specific assemblies.

How much drywall waste should I include?

A 10% to 15% buffer is common for simple rooms. Small rooms, many openings, damaged sheets, ceilings, and awkward cuts can need more.

Why does the calculator subtract doors and windows?

Doors and windows normally reduce the drywall surface that must be covered. The calculator subtracts standard opening allowances before applying the waste buffer.

Can this estimate ceilings too?

Yes. Leave the ceiling option checked when the ceiling is part of the project. Turn it off for wall-only repairs or partial remodels.

Why are sheets, screws, tape, and compound rounded up?

Drywall materials are bought in whole sheets, boxes, rolls, and buckets. Rounding up keeps the shopping list practical and reduces the chance of a shortage.

Does this include finishing labor?

No. It estimates materials. Hanging, taping, mudding, sanding, texture, priming, dust control, disposal, and cleanup can dominate the real project cost.
