Speaking minutes equal script words divided by words per minute. Add planned pauses, slide transitions, and a buffer when the talk must fit a strict time limit.

How to choose words per minute

Use slower values for live presentations, emotional speeches, rooms with echo, or audiences that need time to process. Use faster values only when the material is familiar and rehearsed.

Why a rehearsal can differ from the calculator

Live delivery includes breaths, emphasis, laughter, demos, missed lines, slide friction, and room timing. The estimate is a planning tool, not a stopwatch result.

How to shorten a script

Cut repeated setup, long qualifiers, and examples that do not change the point. Then rerun the timing and keep a buffer for the actual delivery.

Worked example: presentation script timing

The default script has 86 words. At 130 words per minute, spoken time is 86 / 130 = 0.7 minutes.

Pause time is 45 seconds. Slide transition time is 8 slides x 4 seconds = 32 seconds.

Base time is 1:57. Adding a 10% buffer adds 0:12, for a total of 2:08.

A slower pass at 85% of the entered pace is about 2:04, while a faster pass at 115% of the entered pace is about 1:52 before the final buffer.

How do I calculate speaking time from a script?

Count the words, divide by the planned words per minute, then add pauses, transitions, and a timing buffer. This calculator does that locally in the browser.

What words-per-minute value should I use?

Use a value that matches the setting. A clear presentation may need a slower pace than a rehearsed voiceover. Keep the pace editable and compare the slow and fast timing range.

Why add a timing buffer?

Live delivery includes breaths, audience reactions, slide changes, emphasis, and small mistakes. A buffer keeps a script from being planned exactly to the deadline.

Does the script leave my browser?

No. The calculator counts words with client-side JavaScript. It does not submit the script to a server.

Do pauses belong in the script or the pause field?

Use the pause field for planned silence, applause, demos, or transitions. Bracketed pause notes in the script still count if they contain words, so keep timing notes short.

Can I use this for video voiceover?

Yes. Use the voiceover preset, then adjust words per minute and pauses to match the tone, visuals, and breathing room needed for the edit.
