Print size formula: pixels divided by PPI

Maximum print width equals pixel width divided by target PPI. Maximum print height equals pixel height divided by target PPI. If you print larger than that, effective PPI falls.

DPI vs PPI for photo printing

People often say DPI when they mean photo PPI. For this calculator, PPI means the image pixels available per printed inch. Printer dot behavior is a separate print-engine setting.

How crop and aspect ratio affect print size

If a 4:3 image fills an 8 x 10 frame, the aspect ratios do not match. The calculator estimates how much image area is lost when the print is filled rather than fit with borders.

Large prints can use lower PPI

A wall poster is usually viewed from farther away than a 4 x 6 photo. That is why the target PPI input is editable instead of locked to one number.

Worked example: 4000 x 3000 pixels at 300 PPI

The default image is 4,000 x 3,000 pixels, or 12 megapixels.

Maximum uncropped print size at 300 PPI is 4,000 / 300 = 13.33 inches wide and 3,000 / 300 = 10 inches high.

For a 10 x 8 inch print, effective PPI is min(4,000 / 10, 3,000 / 8) = 375 PPI.

With 0.125 inch bleed on each edge, required pixels are ceil((10 + 2 x 0.125) x 300) = 3,075 by 2,475. The image has enough pixels for that target.

Adobe describes 300 pixels per inch as an industry-standard target for high-quality prints, especially smaller prints viewed up close.

FAQ

What is the difference between DPI and PPI?

For photo sizing, PPI is the image pixels per printed inch. DPI is often used casually, but printer DPI is about printer dots. This calculator uses PPI math for image files and print dimensions.

Is 300 PPI always required?

No. 300 PPI is a strong close-view photo target, but posters, banners, and wall art can often use lower PPI because viewers stand farther away.

Why does cropping change print quality?

Cropping throws away pixels. If the image and frame have different aspect ratios, filling the print may reduce the usable pixel width or height before the PPI is calculated.

Should I upscale a small image before printing?

Upscaling can smooth or sharpen a file, but it cannot create original detail. Use the effective PPI result as a warning signal, then inspect a proof at the real print size.

Does file DPI metadata matter?

Metadata can suggest a print size to software, but pixel dimensions and the actual printed inches determine effective PPI. A 4000 x 3000 image has the same pixel data regardless of a metadata tag.

What does bleed mean?

Bleed is extra artwork beyond the final trim edge. If the printer asks for bleed, add it before checking required pixels so edges can be trimmed cleanly.
